Wichita Moms Guide to July 2019 Events


Stay cool by visiting all of the splash pads and pools around town! If you’re ready to brave the heat, we have the best list of parks around.

We are thrilled to bring this resource in collaboration with some of our favorite community partners: Botanica and Sedgwick County Zoo! To make planning easy, we are excited to highlight their July events below:

Botanica

Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects® at Botanica

Do you love LEGO? Yes? Then you’ll love Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects exhibit! Don’t miss it while it’s here at Botanica now through September 19. Throughout the gardens, guests can see 15 different sculptures built with over 330,000 LEGO pieces. General admission applies.

Tuesdays on the Terrace

Celebrate at Wichita’s favorite after work party, Botanica’s Tuesdays on the Terrace! Every Tuesday May-September from 6-8pm, guests can enjoy live music, great food, cocktails, beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages. Tickets are $10 for non-members and $5 for members.

Summer Drop-In Activities

Keep summer fun on your radar! Every weekday from June 3-August 2, 9 am-noon, explore science and garden topics throughout the Downing Children’s Garden with a different theme each week. Free with admission or membership

Lunchtime Lectures

Lunchtime Lectures are every Wednesday from 12:15-1pm. Lunch will be served from 11am-12:15pm for only $8.

Savor the Season: Uncorked: The Unconventional

July 18: 6-8pm. Enjoy luscious berries, savory bacon, bbq, and cool, fragrant wine! Tickets are $50 for non-members and $45 for members. Pre-registration is required.

Breakfast & Butterfly Release

July 17th: 9am Get a hands-on experience of releasing a live butterfly in our Cox Butterfly House then enjoy breakfast provided by Chick- Fil- A. They will be serving chick-n-minis, fresh fruit salad, and orange juice. Tickets are $17 for members & $15 for non-members. 

Summer Night with Nature Connects

July 25th: 6pm. Enjoy a full interactive petting zoo, face painters, bounce house, children activities in the Children’s Garden, outdoor games, Lego-inspired crafts, musical chairs, prizes, an outdoor movie and more. Tickets are $12 for non-members and $5 for members.

Taste This: Bee Tour & Honey Tasting Experience

Enjoy a short tour of the Bee House and delicious honey tasting experience on July 21st from 1-2:30pm. Learn to appreciate the taste nuances of honey through a tasting flight of 4-5 honeys with food pairings and a floral themed beverage. Tickets are $20 per person.

Sedgwick County Zoo

All Day Tuesday

Cox Communications presents Twilight Tuesdays – now all day – at the Zoo. Beat the heat during extended hours, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and enjoy $3 admission all day on Tuesdays in July when you present a voucher, available at area Cox Solutions stores.

Flocktail: Elephants, KOCH, Pride of the Plains

July 25th: 5:30-8:30pm. Fla-mingle at the Zoo with yard games, live entertainment, food and drink at this after-hour event designed exclusively for adults. Tickets are $10.

Farms Festival: County Fair

July 20: 10am-2pm. Celebrate the Farms by participating in some old-fashioned county fair activities. Learn how animals are judged at the fair and much more. You might even win a blue ribbon! Free with Zoo admission.

Summer Learning Adventures

Keep the kids busy this summer during our Summer Learning Adventures! Evening sessions are offered, so there’s sure to be something that fits every schedule. Classes are offered for kids three to twelve years old, with additional programs designed for teens. 

Creature Campouts

July 20: 5:30pm – July 21: 9:30am. Hang around when the rest of the Zoo is closed to see who may be awake! Tickets are $30 for members and $35 for non-members

WMB Neighborhood Group Meet-Ups

Wichita Neighborhood Mom Groups are having all kids of activities in your neighborhood and connecting online to share recommendations and advice. Click here to join your Neighborhood Group, and see below for what’s going on near you this month.

Preschool Playdates are meeting at the park, the zoo and Aviate!

Regularly Scheduled Programming

Many local places have recurring events that are great for moms and families, and you can find them here: 

  • Aviate has Junior Jump Monday through Friday for the younger crowd.
  • Botanica has a Garden Storytime every Thursday morning, in the Children’s Library or weather permitting in the gardens. 
  • Sensory Friendly play at Exploration Place on the second Sunday of every month
  • Urban Air has Jumparoo Toddler Jump every Tuesday and Friday.
  • Home Depot has a free Kids’ DIY workshop on the first Saturday of every month.
  • Family Night at Museum of World Treasures is the first Thursday of the month.
  • Every Friday the Kansas Aviation Museum has a special ticket price for families.
  • Make ICT has free access to their makerspace every other Monday.
  • Kansas Children’s Service League has a support group for Parents of Special Needs Children on the third Monday of every month. 
  • Moxi Junction hosts story and craft time every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10:30am.

Meaghan Koci
Meaghan wears many hats throughout the day: wife to husband of fifteen years, Jeremy, mom to two incredible children, Jacob and Aliza, legal assistant, foster parent, and surrogate. A Wichita native, she met her husband at K-State (Go State!) and they moved from coast (Los Angeles, CA) to coast (Manchester, NH and Groton, CT) before settling back down in Kansas. She is a big fan of her crock pots, has read more than a novel a day for the last five years, and crochets in her “spare” time.
