Pigtails and Crewcuts :: Where Fun is the Focus

My daughter takes a long time to warm up to new situations, especially when they involve new people, new places and any kind of attention focused on her. So when we were asked to try out Pigtails and Crewcuts, a children’s hair salon located in New Market Square, I was sure they would have their work cut out for them in putting her at ease.
pigtails and crewcuts train tableLuckily, we showed up before there were too many customers, and she took some time to walk around and get acquainted with the salon (with her hands in her mouth, of course – a foolproof way of letting me know I need time to get comfortable, Mom). We were warmly greeted by owners and fellow Wichita parents Chance and Melissa, and after taking no more than 5 minutes, my daughter warmed right up and told them that she got to have kiwi fruit snacks if she behaved and that she was there to get her hair done to make her “pretty AND smart“. Then, she naturally made her way to the train table as if she owned the place.

The salon itself has a vibrant, playful atmosphere that immediately made my Pigtails and Crewcuts Lollipopdaughter feel like she was supposed to have fun. I think she forgot that she was shy as she played with the trains, gawked over the prizes in the treasure chest and got to pick out her salon seat. She made the ultimate toddler move by first picking the airplane and then requiring a “necessary” switch to the firetruck. Her stylist, Melissa, was so great with her and got her to warm up immediately (I’m sure the lollipop and showing of Frozen helped a bit too)! And when we needed extra reinforcements, one of the other stylist’s sons came to the rescue with bubbles. My daughter was officially and completely comfortable by this point (and completely smitten with her new crush).

Being the sentimental sap that I am, I wasn’t quite ready to take the first haircut plunge. So Melissa did a special “princess” up do (complete with gold glitter spray) and gave me some tips on how to manage my daughter’s naturally curly, and at times completely unruly and tangly, hair. She suggested one of their kid-friendly organic products for detangler, and we’ve used it religiously ever since. It smells like grapes, is completely safe and easily removes those tangles that have caused a lot of tears in the past!

The licensed staff has a combined 33 years experience in doing hair and working with children, and most are moms themselves. They happily welcome children of all ages and make accommodations for every need (even if it means a child comes in to play a few times before ever attempting to get a haircut).

Pigtails and Crewcuts

In addition to providing haircuts, they offer other services such as ear piercing, up dos and birthday parties. Parents in the Wichita area always seem to be searching for all-inclusive birthday options, and at Pigtails and Crewcuts, they want you to simply show up and enjoy. They provide invitations, a party host, stylist, cupcakes and drinks, 2 services, karaoke, a craft and goodie bags.

If there is one word to describe our experience at Pigtails and Crewcuts, it would most definitely be fun! It was a wonderful time for my daughter and I as we made it a mother-daughter date morning (complete with a stop to Starbucks, which was conveniently located in the same plaza). She came out of her shell, made a new friend, got treated to candy (which is something typically saved for special occasions at our house) and begged to go show off her “hair-do” to her dad and grandparents.

Now, if only I was able to entertain her daily request to give her princess hair…that will make her “pretty AND smart“.
