A Love Letter to My Local Library

Hey girl,*

Yeah, I’m talking to you. I just wanted to thank you for everything you do for me and my family. This pandemic has been ROUGH, but you’ve seen me through every week. Some weeks we saw you more than once. Others only virtually, but you were always there for us.

What started as a one-sided affair has now become a family activity. You offer my teen a computer. Apparently, video games become boring at home, so he gets to play them with you. For my youngest, you provide a wide variety to let his imagination run wild. From zombies, to dogs, and now on to Anime, you offer him a glimpse into things he finds on TikTok and YouTube but at a more age appropriate level.

And of course, for me, I get it all. I get books and movies with a side of TV shows and audiobooks. You’ve also given me a place (pre-pandemic) to meet other moms. We’ve had makeup instruction and even a Favorite Things Party in your meeting spaces.

You really do have it all.

Honestly, once the pandemic started I relied on you more heavily. I needed the extra comfort in the form of e-books, and you did not let me down. You also provided us with some really fun, family movies from my youth that I got to torture my kids with. It was only supposed to be for a few weeks, but that turned into months. We did trivia nights at home and I won prizes! You provided themed activities throughout the spring and summer, and as we are nearing the hopeful end, you have also surprised us with goodie bags for all the kids that include books! Your staff is always friendly when I come through the drive and ring the doorbell to pick up our orders, and I can’t wait until I can use your passport services so I can travel again!

I don’t know how to thank you properly for all you do for us. I want you to know that I love you more than a book lover loves the scent of books. You are the Romeo to my Juliet. The Man in the Yellow Hat to my Curious George. So thank you.

Sincerely,

A Book Lover
