Non-Scary Halloween Movies for Kids (Big and Small!)

One of my favorite things to do with my boys is to snuggle and watch a movie. As the fall nights become crisp it gives us even more reason to do that. Insert Halloween movies. This holiday has so many choices for all ages! Here are 5 movies for two different age groups, ages 4-9 and 10-13. I kept it non-scary and had the help of my boys (6 and 11) to pick a few of their favorites (and a few of mine!).

Halloween Movies for Kids Ages 4-9

Spooky Buddies: The puppies accidentally unleash the Howlloween Hound. They must work with their kids to stop the hound and the evil Warlock before they take over the town. The first scene gave my son a little scare but he was begging to watch it again as soon as it was over. (Rated G)

Alvin and the Chipmunks meet the Wolfman: An oldie but a goodie. The chipmunks have been scared from watching too many monster movies and their spooky new neighbor. But when Theodore is bit, the monsters become real. Alvin, Simon and the Chipettes try to figure out what is wrong and how to get him back to his normal, lovable self. (Rated G)

Mickey’s Monster Musical: Mickey and Minnie set out for a picnic when the Toon Car breaks down. It’s a stormy day so they run for the nearest place, a spooky castle. They meet new friends and while they are there help them solve a mystery. (Not rated)

It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown: All the characters you know and love are getting ready for Halloween. Linus and Sally sit in a pumpkin patch waiting for The Great Pumpkin while everyone else goes trick or treating and a Halloween party. When everyone stops at the pumpkin patch to check on them Sally gets mad at Linus for making her miss all the fun. The Great Pumpkin never shows up but Linus is sure that he’ll come the following year. (Rated G)

Scooby Doo and the Goblin King: After Shaggy and Scooby ruin a magic show the magician captures a fairy and steals her magic. Shaggy and Scooby must go to Halloween Land to get the Goblin King’s scepter to stop the evil magician. (Not rated)

Halloween Movies for Kids Ages 10-13

Hocus Pocus: A cult classic turned Halloween favorite! 3 kids accidentally free a coven of witches. With the resurrected witches back all they want to do is continue their plan to take the souls of the town’s children. The 3 kids and a talking cat do everything they can to stop the witches plot by sunrise. (Rated PG)

Beetlejuice: A happy couple end up on the wrong side of living and an annoying couple and their daughter move into their home they are currently haunting. They look for ways to scare them to leave but use their last resort, Beetlejuice – “bio-exorcist”, to get the family to move out. (Rated PG but is from the 1980s so the ratings were a lot more lenient with a few curse words and some adult content)

Goosebumps: The new kid in town meets his mysterious neighbor and his daughter. When sneaking into their house him and his friend unleash monsters from all of the Goosebumps books. They later find out the neighbor is the author R.L. Stine and his books were written on a magic typewriter that brings his characters to life. They have to hurry to get the monsters back under control before they take over the town. (Rated PG)

Zombies: Zombies and humans alike are going to school together for the first time. A zombie and a cheerleader end up becoming friends and try to show the town that their differences don’t make them bad. There are a lot of teachable moments throughout the movie such as accepting differences and diversity and being a friend even if it’s the hard thing to do. (Not rated – Disney Channel Original Movie)

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, decides he wants to celebrate Christmas this year. Everyone in the town gets in on it but after Santa Claus is kidnapped and accidentally delivered to Oogie Boogie things start to go wrong. Jack and his friend sally must work together to rescue Santa and help save Christmas for the rest of the world. (Rated PG)
