DIY Twin Baby Halloween Costumes

I am by no means a DIY queen, but I will happily don that DIY mom hat and make my kids’ costumes when it comes to Halloween.

My twins are two years old, which means we’ve had two DIY style Halloweens so far. The themes have centered on animals. And I always incorporate my older daughter in the mix.

DIY Sheep Costumes

When the twins were five months old, and Halloween rolled around, my daughter was Little Bo Peep; her little brothers were her sheep. Below is how I created these adorable twin costumes.

Supplies:

  • 2 White or Black Long Sleeve Onesies
  • 2 Pairs of Black Pants or Leggings
  • Cotton Balls (and a LOT of them)
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Hot Glue Sticks
  • lack socks or soft shoes
  • Black Face Paint (non-toxic)
  • 2 Baby Sheep Hats (you can knit them, make them, or order them from Etsy; I did the latter because, TWINS!)

Putting It Together:

Get out those onesies, glue guns, and cotton balls because it is time to go to town. Hot glue cotton balls all over the onesies, making sure there aren’t gaps when you stretch the onesie out (babies have those delicious tummies, after all). Let the onesies thoroughly dry, then hang them up until it’s time to trick or treat.

To get your sheep ready, I put my twinners in tanktop style onesies before putting them in the cotton ball covered top. A base layer keeps them more comfortable. Next, slip-on those little black pants, the sheep hat, and some cozy warm black socks. The last step is creating those cute black noses, rub face paint or black eyeshadow on little nose tips, and you’re ready!

DIY Chicken Costumes

The next year we went with a “farm” theme, my daughter was a farmer, and my twins were chickens. Best. Costumes. Ever. Here are some epic photos of getting ready and the complete how-to on making the costumes.

Supplies:

  • 2 White Long Sleeve Onesies
  • 4 White Feather Boas
  • 2 Pairs of Black, Brown, or Yellow Pants or Tights (we used plain black sweat pants, it was cold!)
  • Yellow Shoes OR Yellow felt to cover shoes (we used yellow crocs since we already had them)
  • Two Knit Chicken Hats (you can knit these yourself, or purchase them on Etsy)
  • Safety Pins
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Hot Glue Sticks

Putting It Together:

To make sure the feathers fit comfortably around your littles, you will want to put their onesies on them, grab those feather boas and pin the boas as you wrap them around the onesie. Measuring the boas out across the shirts ensures the feathers aren’t too tight or too loose; they will be juuuuuust right.

Next, take the onesies with the safety-pinned feathers and your glue gun. Begin to tack the feathers down in about 2″ intervals, removing the safety pins as you go. The boas don’t need to be fully glued down, just glued in enough spots to stay in place.

You can wrap the feathers around the onesies’ arms, but I found my twins preferred their arms to be free and clear of feathers, so I wrapped only the body of the onesies with the boas.

And that’s that. If you knit a hat, you will, of course, need to do that. But to put the costume together, you do the following: put the tights or leggings first, then slip the onesie on over that. Next up, put those chubby little feet into some yellow shoes (or cut out yellow felt in the shape of chicken feet and tack it down onto any pair of shoes) and put that cute little chicken hat on their heads. Bam. Done and done.

More DIY Twin Costume Ideas

This year I am toying with an outer space theme where my daughter is the sun, and my twins are other planets, fitting since they believe the world revolves around her. In the meantime, here are some other super cute DIY twin costume ideas I’ve scoured the internet to find just for you!

The best part of most of these costumes is that they could work for siblings as well. Don’t limit yourselves to twins here; most of these would look super cute on any set of siblings around.

  • Two peas in a pod (perfect for super itty bitty twins)
  • Dr. Suess Thing 1 and Thing 2
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Milk and Cookies
  • Luke and Leia from Star Wars
  • Raggedy Ann and Andy
  • Mac and Cheese
  • Top Gun Maverick and Goose (my personal favorite since it includes using a wagon!)
  • A Rainbow and A Rain Cloud
