Got a teen who’s ready to start driving? It can be confusing to figure out what they need to get started!

STATE OF KANSAS DRIVER LICENSE REQUIREMENTS FOR TEENS

When attending driving school in Kansas, new drivers are required to receive 8 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction before passing both a written test & driving test in order to receive their certificate of completion.

Ages 14-16 WITHOUT a Learner’s Permit

You do not need a learner’s permit in order to take a driving course – and you are not required to take a driving course in order to receive your learner’s permit. If your student can pass the written test at the DMV, they can receive their learner’s permit from the State of Kansas. Many parents choose to have their student take a driving course first, but this is not required.

Ages 14-16 WITH a Learner’s Permit

After your student has held their learner’s permit for 1 year, they are eligible for their restricted license. It is still recommended that they take a driving course through their school or one of the options below in order to make sure they are prepares & receive the proper training in the classroom and behind the wheel. After passing the test, they are ready to head to the DMV!
