If you’re like me, a few hundred hours of childhood was dedicated to singing and dancing along with a young Christian Bale and his band of newsboys, as they fought for a brighter future in the 90s movie musical Newsies. The Broadway version debuted in 2012, and the story has incredible staying power, appealing to kids of all ages.
Whether your children are theater veterans or attending for the first time, Music Theatre Wichita’s production of Disney’s Newsies is a fantastic family outing with kids and teens.
What to know about the show:
???? The catchy, rousing songs are by Alan Menken, who also wrote the music to The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Hercules. You can listen to the show to prep, or hear Music Theatre Wichita’s leading man sing “Santa Fe” here.
???? While many Disney favorites are, well, princess-y, this show has strong appeal for both boys and girls. Singing newsboys and girls perform athletic and exciting dancing and tumbling.
???????? In addition to the young professional actors/singer/dancers onstage, there will be more than 70 local kids and teens in the cast – you’ll probably know at least one of them! They’ll appear for some of the biggest production numbers, and it just might inspire your kid or teen to want to try something new.
???????? Contributing to the timeless nature of Newsies are the themes of fighting for what’s right and coming together as a community to effect change. You’re guaranteed to have some great conversations with your kids after watching this show!

Tips for taking kids to musical theatre productions:
???? Don’t worry too much about kids staying completely still or quiet. The grown-ups can rarely manage it! Remind children that most questions can be answered at intermission, and that we are going to try not to distract the people around us. We recommend sitting closer to an aisle if you have a less experienced theatregoer.
???? Aisles and balcony seats are great for shorter patrons, and because there’s a raked floor at Century II, sitting back a little farther in the hall is often the best way to make sure kids can see. A limited number of boosters are available at the hearing assistance table.
???? Save dessert until after the show. We’ve had more than one occasion where kids went out for a special afternoon and ate new foods for lunch followed by ice cream, resulting in…not feeling well at the show.
???? Intermission is for the bathroom first and foremost! If you need a family bathroom, there’s one available on 2nd floor on the left side of the house. The first floor bathrooms typically cycle through the quickest.
???????? A word about attire – every child has their own tolerance and experience level with dressing up. It’s harder for many kids to stay relatively still if they aren’t wearing comfortable clothing. Casual everyday clothes are completely fine to wear. We do advise bringing along a sweater or jacket – it might be 95 degrees outside, but it can be chilly in the hall.
