Walk, Run, or Cheer Your Way Through Wichita This Fall | Prairie Fire Marathon on October 8th

Sponsored by Prairie Fire Marathon/Wichita Sports Commission.

Walk, run or cheer your way through the streets of Wichita with the Prairie Fire Marathon on October 8th! This year will be the 44th Prairie Fire Marathon, presented by Davis-Moore Auto Group, running from downtown to College Hill and through Riverside in one of the flattest, fastest (and most fun!) marathon courses you can find in the country.

Whether or not you’re a seasoned runner, there are lots of ways to be a part of all the action!

Bring the Atmosphere (and signs, and cowbell… more cowbell!)

The fun & entertainment on the course is a huge part of what motivates a marathoner (it can’t be all the actual running – right??). Whether you’re an organization looking to volunteer at a water station, a cheer group or band who wants to entertain and distract the thousands of runners on the route with your talents, or if you want to dust off your accordion/baton twirling/high school dance skills, you can bring the energy to the course!

Pro tip: Bring your breakfast and be at the corner of Douglas & Hillside at 7:45 to see the first wave of runners!

Walk/Jog/Run

5K (3.1 miles – you can do it!)

There are two different options for the 5K:

  • Traditional timed 5K
  • Friendly 5K (presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas) – untimed, great low price for two people to do it together. Great for friends, family or kids who want to be active together.

Half-Marathon

Done a few 5Ks and ready to level up? Or running your second (or 50th) half-marathon? Enjoy the views, the atmosphere, and the beautiful Fall weather of Wichita while you do it!

Marathon (did we mention it’s flat?)

For first-time marathoners or those looking to set their own Personal Record, or even qualify for the Boston Marathon, the PFM is a great opportunity to show yourself what you can do. Because of the flat terrain (thank you Kansas!), and street (not trail) course, marathon runners will enjoy checking the PFM off their marathon to-do list!

All runners (and walkers) receive a shirt, bib, medal at the finish line, plus free race photos thanks to Visit Wichita. After the race, enjoy a post-race party at WAVE with food, drinks (did you know that it’s traditional for racers 21+ to get a free beer at the end a race? Thankfully we do!), music from DJ4TheWin, games and activities, and lots of relaxation and celebration.

Volunteer

The Wichita Sports Commission, which puts on the Prairie Fire Race Series, is a non-profit organization, and operates with the help of volunteers like you! Volunteers are needed for course monitoring, water stations, packet pickup, set up, tear down, bag check, and other areas throughout the 13.1 mile course. Both individuals or groups are welcome to volunteer.
