5 Questions You’d Never Ask (But Want Answered) About Plastic Surgery

questions about plastic surgeryWhen it comes to plastic surgery, some people find it scary, and others may have questions they’re too afraid to ask. Yet, we find that many women have the very same concerns about their postpartum bodies. They exercise and eat well, but they just can’t get their bodies back.

At the Plastic Surgery Center and PSC Aesthetics, we offer both surgical and non-invasive procedures to help our patients feel good again after childbirth and breastfeeding. We want to help you get your pre-baby body back. Let’s look at a few of the questions you’d never ask but want answered.

#1: I had my last child several years ago, and I still look like I’m pregnant. How can I get rid of my baby bump?

Your bump is most likely a bit of extra fat, some loose skin and muscle laxity. You’ve probably found that diet and exercise just aren’t cutting it. That’s because the muscles can only be tightened through surgery.

The best way to treat your baby bump is with Tummy Tuck surgery (abdominoplasty). We can flatten your abdomen by removing loose, excess fat and skin and tightening muscles in your abdominal wall. A tummy tuck may also remove some, if not all, of the stretch marks on your lower abdomen. In addition, we may use liposuction to further contour your mid-section.

We often perform a tummy tuck in conjunction with a breast procedure when we do a Mommy Makeover.

#2: Is there any way I can get my pre-baby breasts back?

Yes, plastic surgery can help you get your breasts back. Which procedure we choose depends on what’s going on. For example, after pregnancy and breastfeeding:

  • If you have sagging breasts, we may due a breast lift with or without implants.
  • If your breasts are smaller, you may opt for just breast implants. This is ideal when you want larger breasts and don’t have excess skin due to sagging.
  • If your breasts have become too large, you may opt for a breast reduction.

Like the tummy tuck, breast surgery is always part of the Mommy Makeover.

#3: How do I know if a Mommy Makeover would help me?

Your first step is to meet with a plastic surgeon. One of the best things about a Mommy Makeover is that you and your surgeon create a plan together to target the areas where you need and want the most help.

Mommy Makeover surgery is a combination of cosmetic procedures that reshape and enhance your body after childbirth. Mommy Makeovers can include a combination of procedures:

  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to correct stretched and loose skin
  • Liposuction of problem areas
  • Breast procedure – either a breast reduction, breast lift, or breast augmentation procedure
  • Additionally, you may choose to include facial procedures such as laser resurfacing, Ultherapy® and injectables such as BOTOX and DYSPORT to correct signs of premature aging and tired eyes.

#4: I’ve got kids, and I need to know how long I need to recover.

Your recovery time depends on which procedures you undergo, how many you receive, and whether they are performed in combination or over a series of appointments.

When it comes to driving kids around or holding a baby or young child, again that varies with each procedure. Each surgery or procedure has its own progression of recovery, and we can talk to you about this during your consultation.

Depending on the procedure, you may find yourself driving and holding a child in a week or two. It may be longer when it comes to picking children up.

#5: What’s the most important question to ask my plastic surgeon?

Your first question should be, “Are you board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?” You want to be sure that your doctor has this certification because it means that her or she has the highest level of surgical knowledge and has completed at least six years of surgical training and experience, with a minimum of three years of plastic surgery training. Your safety and results make this your most important question.
