Sibling Love

Siblings.

I’ve been thinking a lot about them lately. As I watch my youngest child grow, and my older daughter naturally becomes an intricate part of his life, I have been thinking about how amazingly cool siblings are. Sure, you don’t get to choose them, and you’ve probably had some serious arguments or disagreements at times. But you’ve also created memories together from as far back as you can remember, and those memories are filled with a variety of stories and experiences. No matter how different you are, you have similarities, because well… you’re siblings. And, there is just something special about having and being a brother or sister.

Growing up, I always had the love and support of my sister. She’s always been there for me, always. Even now with a full house of boys and a busy schedule, she’s still there for me at the drop of a hat. There honestly isn’t a greater friendship than the one I have with her. I’ve always cherished her and loved her dearly, she’s the greatest!

More recently, I’ve started to see what I can only assume would be life as a sibling through her eyes. As I look at the relationship of my kids from a mother’s perspective,  I’m beginning to see a whole new side of sibling love. I realize how much more grateful I am for the amazing sister and friend I was given. As the younger sister, I never knew any different, my sister was always there, I was never alone. However, I’m sure she remembers when I was born, holding me, nurturing me, mothering me with her little sister hands. I never understood how powerful that was until watching my daughter, Caroline, with my son, Harrison. I can now see a glimpse of the emotion and love she experienced when I was born, and it’s so special. Siblings truly are a gift.

Watching my kids, I can see a special connection. It is a blessing that they will be able to have and experience such a selfless, unconditional love with one another. From the moment Harry was born, Caroline loved him whole-heartedly. I’ll never forget how she squeezed him tightly and looked up with a smile from ear to ear, like she’d been waiting for that day forever. There is an excitement and adoration in their eyes each morning when they see each other. Caroline adores Harry. She shows him a love that’s caring, heartfelt and genuine. The way his love shines through for her with a huge grin and sparkle in his eye, melts my heart. They make each other laugh like no one else can, and they just seem to understand each other. It’s precious. He’s the beginning and end of her everything, and he could watch and smile at her all day. She runs to greet him each morning with the sweetest most sincere, “Good morning!”, and he’s the first and last person she wants to hug and kiss before heading to bed. There is no denying they have something very special and that their love grows each day. I cherish watching them interact together and develop a relationship that is unlike any other. I hope their love and respect for one another only grows as they grow. I hope they always do life together.

To the outside world we grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other’s hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time.” – Clara Ortega –
