Cozy fires, hot chocolate, Christmas lights, gingerbread houses, and *NSYNC Christmas – yes, I love Christmas time! What I especially love about the season are the traditions my I grew up enjoying with my family. When we had our first son Luke, I decided to begin some Christmas traditions of our own. I wanted to keep some from my childhood but also desired to add a few new ones! Here’s what you can find going on in my house in December:
Christmas Eve Pajamas
After church on Christmas Eve and dinner, my boys are allowed to open one gift each: fun matching pajamas! This year due to their latest fascination with all things Star Wars, they will be getting Star Wars pajamas from the Disney store. Bonus: Christmas morning pictures are so cute with the kiddos wearing matching jammies!
Baking a Birthday Cake for Jesus
This is my absolute favorite tradition! On Christmas Eve we bake and decorate a birthday cake for Jesus. We then read the story of Jesus’ birth from The Bible and reiterate that we celebrate Christmas because it is Jesus’ birthday. We have the birthday cake for dessert after dinner on Christmas Day and sing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus.
Ornament Making
Three years ago my family began making our own Christmas ornaments at a local glass shop. At Karg Art Glass in Kechi, you can create your own glass ornaments! This is a great way to spend time together and create beautiful ornaments for your tree. You can select your own colors and design – this includes speckled or swirled glass and array of fun colors. The spots for this are limited, so be sure to call ahead to book a session!
The Salvation Army Angel Tree
Perhaps the tradition I hope my kids remember most is choosing an Angel from The Salvation Army Angel Tree. During Christmas time especially, I want my kids to learn that it is better to give than to receive. Each boy chooses an Angel from the tree, then we get to go shopping for the child they chose – my boys LOVE it! On Christmas morning we even talk about how excited the child must be as they open the gifts we gave.
Baking Treats for Others
Y’all, I am not a cook, but I love to bake! We crank up some Michael Bublé Christmas, pre-heat the ovens, and let the fun begin! My boys love to help me bake and especially love the decorating part. In years past, we have baked for teachers, fireman, police officers, and neighbors. Baking is a fun way to get in the Christmas spirit and we always keep a few goodies for ourselves, too.
Regardless of what Christmas traditions your family holds dear, the important thing to remember is that you are creating memories with loved ones. Traditions do not need to be costly or extravagant, they are about spending time together! My children may not remember all the toys they received or the number of gifts under the Christmas tree, but I hope they look back at the Christmases past and remember the wonderful memories we created.
