“How Does She Do It?” Confessions of a Mompreneur

Somebody asked me the question today “How do you do it?” My first thought was “I don’t.” Then I hit the rewind button in my head and thought about it.

From the outside, it probably looks like I’ve got this. Perhaps I’m making it look easy. It doesn’t matter if you’re a working mom, a stay-at-home or fall anywhere else within the spectrum.

The juggle is real.

In an attempt to be honest and express intentions of hope to all of the super hero moms in this world, alas a confession: Here is an inside peek at the crazy life of a #girlboss running a business, chasing two littles under age 3 and caring for a disabled parent as part of the sandwich generation.

This is “how she does it.”

  • My eyes open at 6:45am and I secretly pray that my children, who still sleep in my bed and mostly on me, with their legs in my face, are going to fall back to sleep….they don’t. So we get up. I count down the next hour and fifteen minutes until the childcare provider arrives.
  • Sometimes Most of the time, I recycle outfits…without washing them. (I. Know.) I just hope there’s no evidence of spit up, snot, food or heaven only know what else.
  • Dry Shampoo. Mascara. Red Lip Stain. Done.
  • I scurry around in the morning lightly tidying as much as I can before grabbing a cup of coffee (which I will likely drink cold) and maybe something for the road to get me by until lunch – which usually lands on the counter and I forget as I walk out the door with four bags flung over my shoulder as I’m already 5 minutes late to my meeting
  • I LOVE my work and I LOVE my children. I work all day, playing a furious game of whack a mole and count down the minutes until I get to hug my littles. This is my “right now”. Balance doesn’t exist for me and I am getting more okay with that.
  • My inbox would make you cringe.
  • I meal plan in my head….we eat out nearly every night. Meal planning is officially just a daydream.
  • 2 Words: Laundry. Service. Not for everything (yet), just for the kids clothes. I decided recently that tiny sock folding is for the birds. This is one of the ways I love myself.
  • On average, I shower twice a week…usually with my children, who I generally have to smell to remember if they have or haven’t bathed. My kids don’t know what routine looks like. Baths in the evenings? Nope. When mom showers, we just rotate them in.
  • I count chasing my toddler as my daily workout.
  • My podcasts and audio books count for  “what I’m reading now”.
  • Multi-tasking is my life. I am not ashamed to say I can run circles around the average Joe. Calling inventory orders in while I have a baby on the breast is not unusual.
  • When I finally get home, I do nothing except sit on the floor with my children and play because THOSE are the moments I cherish. I ignore my phone…if you call me, I’m not answering until tomorrow.
  • When my head finally hits the pillow, its likely because I’ve fallen asleep next to one of the littles after going through to do list in my head and thinking “when the baby goes to sleep I’ll get up and finish ______”.

Sleep. Wake Up. Repeat. Adore.
