Wichita Area Libraries and Story Times

Six days a week, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. there are story times happening all over our city and surrounding areas. Hip, hip, hooray! Here are a few tips for attendees – scroll down for a list of Wichita Area libraries and organizations who host story times.

Story time information should be listed on each location’s website and are subject to change, and those that run on a session schedule may take several breaks throughout the year, so check links and/or social media before you go. Wichita Public Library often shares their story times on our family event calendar here.

1. Shop around. Not all story times are the same and it might take a few tries to find one that’s right for you. Every teacher has their own style and the mix of books, finger plays and songs is a personal preference thing for your kids and for you. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

2. Timing is everything. This is not a once in a lifetime opportunity that’s worth skipping a nap or delaying a meal (a.k.a. the perfect recipe for a toddler meltdown). If it doesn’t fit easily into your child’s schedule, maybe now’s not the right time to introduce this particular story time. You want story time to be a fun, exciting exposure to books and “formal” class structure.

3. Play nice. With other parents that is. Say “hi.” and “Isn’t this weather beautiful/crummy?” Or go next level and learn a name or two during small talk. Story time is likely the only time today that a parent gets to talk to someone that isn’t three feet tall and may be the main reason they put on their nice yoga pants to sit on a musty carpet square, so be friendly. Oh, and it sets a good example for the kids, too!

4. Say thanks.  Most of the below story times are free for you and your family. Thank the librarian or story time leader (you and your kiddo). Patronize their business. Tell friends.  Show them some love on Facebook with a check-in or positive review. The more great feedback area businesses and organizations receive about their kid’s programs the more likely even more may become available.
