Closet Staples Perfect for Transitioning to Fall

Pumpkin spice is everywhere, and the patches are getting ready for the hustle and bustle of the Halloween season. In Kansas the fall season may mean snow on Halloween or heading to the pumpkin patch in 90-degree heat. The benefit of this completely unpredictable season means that I don’t have to give up all my favorite summer wardrobe staples quite yet. Fall is all about transition and the same can be said about your fall attire. Here are my top 5 favorite transitional closet staples that help carry me into fall.

Leggings/Tights

Adding tights to a cute dress or skirt give you the opportunity to continue to wear those basic summer dresses into fall.  Most tights are not going to break the bank and allow you to mix things up without having to fully commit to a complete wardrobe refresh.  Tights remind you to much of your mother’s required pantyhose give leggings a try.  I know it seems that any more the go to mom uniform is black athleisure leggings, but why not try something a little more edgy like moto leggings or those Spanx leather legging that all the fashion bloggers rave about.

I love styling a basic t-shirt dress with a pair of comfortable leggings, Chuck Taylor tennis shoes, and my trusty denim jacket.  Which leads me to my next transitional staple.

Jackets

Blazers, bombers, denim, leather there really are so many ways that a great jacket can bring your favorite summer outfit into fall.  Jackets allow you to continue to wear a soft cute camisole that you may have been willing to rock solo in the summer when temps were high when things aren’t quite so balmy.  I can not tell you how often I turn to my denim jacket to warm up a cute summer dress or to take an athleisure outfit up a notch.  Looking to transition your outfit from day to night add a leather jacket.

Take my trusty denim jacket throw it over a long-striped swing tank and a great pair of athleisure leggings with your favorite athletic tennis shoes takes you from the couch to coffee with a girlfriend looking pulled together.

Boots/booties

I feel like boots are the truest sign that fall has arrived.  I don’t know that I have seen a more basic fall outfit than a utility jacket over a long and lean white tank with black leggings and tall brown boots, but why be basic?  If you are wanting to embrace fall fashion, but when just the idea of covering your body in clothing from head to toe makes you start to sweat boots/booties can be the answer. Adding a great pair of booties to that perfect maxi you have been wearing all summer long is the perfect way to continue to look pulled together without having to layer.

Why not enjoy the fact that you can continue to bare some skin by adding a heeled bootie to a flowy sun dress or spice things up for date night by adding a moto jacket with a cute bodycon dress and peep toe black booties.

Cardigans/Sweaters

Much like a jacket, cardigans make those summer friendly outfits perfect for fall.  Duster cardigans or those that are longer in length are perfect to throw on with a dress or even with a great pair of shorts.  Finding lightweight sweaters that I can wear now with a cute skirt and transition into the cooler temps with jeans is the perfect definition of transitional wardrobe staples.  One word of caution; don’t get to bulky keep lines long and lean so you don’t look like you have thrown on everything in your closet.

Jeans

A great pair of jeans is always a closet staple no matter the season.  Find at least one pair that you can dress up or down and that make you feel fabulous.

A lightweight sweater with your go to jeans and the perfect bootie will have you set to take on those cool fall nights by a bonfire.

Other things to consider

When wanting to bring fall into your wardrobe is to play with color, texture, and print.  I am a firm believer that most animal prints are a neutral, but if this is not something you are comfortable embracing fall is a great time to add those warm animal prints into your rotation.  Warm fall colors like mustard and olive can quickly transform a summer staple into a fall ready combination.  Accessories such as scarves, hats and jewelry are great a great way to bring in the fall elements with your everyday basics.

I love fall and love the idea that a few quality pieces can make me look season ready without breaking the bank.  Do you have any go to season transitional clothing recommendations?
