I have never cared much about astrological signs. I have always known I am a Gemini, but never really knew what that meant. So let me lay the ground work on why all of a sudden I care:
It was my oldest son’s 5th birthday and we were at his birthday party. My happy-go-lucky child was excited to share his day with his friends, when out of nowhere he started melting down and crying. Yes, I know, it’s his birthday and he can cry if he wants to, but during his party? My sensitive son was worried about his friends having a fun time at the party. While trying to console him, another parent looked at me and said, “My son’s birthday is next week, it’s normal for their zodiac sign.” Both confusion and curiosity set in.
What does that mean?
Later that night as my child slept, I decided to look into zodiac signs. Reading about a Gemini and the typical personality traits they possess, definitely describes me. Outgoing, expressive, independent and indecisive. Yep, that’s about accurate for me. Then reading about a Cancer, definitely describes many traits my oldest son portrays. Emotional, sentimental, protective and caring. WOW! The story goes on with our youngest, and traits of a Leo, and then for my husband with traits of a Libra. Even more interesting is when you review the signs and what each typically don’t like, who they work best with, what they are like as a child and as a parent.
We have always enjoyed astrology, but this new subject matter became an interest for the entire family and brought back a flood of memories from my childhood. Throughout my younger years, I can remember my parents taking us to our favorite local Chinese restaurant each weekend and I would read about my Chinese Zodiac sign on the place mat while waiting for our food. My Chinese animal zodiac sign is a pig, showing traits of being compassionate, generous and diligent. My favorite fun fact I learned about was that my special time of day ranged from 9 pm to 11 pm. That sounds about right! I enjoy that time where the house is quiet and I can catch up on things with a glass of wine in hand, winding down from a long day.
One rainy weekend, we spent an afternoon reading about these signs and resonating with the personality traits. Plus, telling your children their sign is an animal can get any conversation flowing. For the Chinese zodiac, my husband is a dog, our oldest is a monkey and our youngest is a horse. What we did not expect to learn from finding out about each of our signs was how to work best with them based on the traits. For example, for me as a Gemini, I finally understood why I love to blog, talk and sing. Its considered an outlet where I can express my feelings and emotions. We found that Cancer signs like to have close relationships with their parents and find a sense of security through this bond. Ways to work with them is by helping them build confidence and their self-esteem by showing them that they are important and we are their biggest fans. For Leo children, we read that they may act out and can be self-centered, so it is best to be straight forward and direct when talking to them. Figuring out the personality traits of our children through reading about their zodiac signs was extremely helpful!
While I doubt I have time to read a daily horoscope, we did like finding out a little bit more about ourselves through discussion of our zodiac signs. If anything, it allowed my children to open up (at least the oldest) and explain his sensitivities and concerns from his birthday and things going on with his life.
Now, do I dare look up the signs for our pets?
