Fun Star Wars Day Activities & Snacks | May the 4th Be With You!

Our family is fascinated with Star Wars. Our children have all of the action figures, enjoy watching the movies on repeat and can often be found comfortably reading one of the Jedi Academy books. They always look forward to coming home from school on a Friday night when there is a new episode of Mandalorian available on Disney+.  Star Wars makes us happy.  So what do we do on national Star Wars day? We celebrate!

Star Wars Day takes place on May 4th each year, a date chosen from the popular phrase, “May the force be with you.”  Hence why we say, “May the fourth be with you.” While I would love to take our family back to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and relive the day with real size characters and scenery, we have found many ways to recreate the fun at home.

Pick a Character and Suit Up!

Whether you are a Jedi or a Stormtrooper, Princess Leia or Rey, build your attire from things found around your home or use a costume.  While it is easy to pick one of the main characters of Star Wars, there are actually over 21,000 you could pick from!  Grab an old robe, t-shirt or sheet and get creative. The accessories can be even more fun.  For the full list of characters to pick from, visit the Star Wars databank website.  If you want to take it up a notch, have a costume contest for the best dressed or most creative!

Gear Up and Make a Light Saber!

With three simple things, you can make a light saber at home. I am normally able to find all of these items at our local dollar store. These are great for birthday parties and backyard battles with friends!

To make the light saber, pick up the following items:

  • Pool Noodle
  • Duct Tape
  • Electrical Tape

Steps to Make the Light Saber:

  1. Cut the pool noodle in half.
  2. Wrap duct tape around one end of each noodle, about 5-6 inches up from the bottom of the noodle. This allows you to be creative with the electrical tape when making your handle.
  3. Wrap electrical tape on top of the duct tape. There are no rules here. You can be as creative as you want to be and they do not all have to be the same.  I do find it helpful to have electrical tape at the bottom and top of the duct tape.

Make a Galactic Snack!

At this point, you will need a ship and definitely a snack, so try making a Tie Fighter!  Tie fighters are simple to make for all ages and the ingredient options are endless.

  • Ingredients:
    • Square or hexagon shaped food.  This includes things like crackers of all kinds, cheese or even fruit.
    • Peanut butter, Nutella, cream cheese or even frosting. Something that will glue the squares or hexagons together to your center food.
    • Circle or square shaped food, like a marshmallow, cheese or fruit.

To build the tie fighter, take whatever you chose to glue the wing panels together to the center food item of the tie fighter. In my examples, we used the following:

Tie Fighter 1: Graham crackers, marshmallow and peanut butter.
Tie Fighter 2: Cheez-Its, square cut cheese and cream cheese.
Tie Fighter 3: Rice Thins, mozzarella cheese stick cut into a square and cream cheese.

For this event, we definitely encourage our children to play with their food, with sound effects and all!  Disney has a new galactic baking cookbook out this year and shared a fun recipe to try.  Click here to check out their Bantha Blue Butter Sandwich Cookies. You could also add some blue milk to drink with those yummy cookies.

Now that you are fueled, dressed and ready, turn on the Imperial March and battle with the light sabers.  For a more quiet activity, The Star Wars website has plenty of available resources to keep anyone busy! You can learn how to draw a star wars character, download a Star Wars day activity pack full or coloring pages and more or where I went down the rabbit hole, picking my future Zoom background to use.  At the end of the day, our family likes to kick back and watch one of the many Star Wars movies or shows available through streaming services like Disney+ or Netflix.

No matter how you celebrate, may the force be with you!
