Don’t Let These 3 Myths About Ebooks Keep You From Reading

Have you heard of Read An Ebook Day? Celebrated on September 18, this day is a way to celebrate electronic books and encourage a love of reading. We are book lovers in our household and enjoy books in their many forms including hardback, paperback, ebooks and audio. As a mom I’ve grown to appreciate the convenience of Ebooks especially on days when my preschooler can’t seem to use walking feet or an inside voice, two prerequisites to visiting the library! My trusty Nook has been with me for a long time, but it wasn’t until last year that a friend introduced me to a free reading app linked to my library card that I truly began to enjoy reading again. This got me thinking that maybe other people don’t realize how fantastic it is to connect to electronic literature. I’m here to help debunk some common misconceptions about Ebooks just in time for Read An Ebook Day!

Myth #1: They’re Expensive

You may be surprised at how affordable Ebooks are. My local library uses an app called Libby (supported by Overdrive, an online collection of digital content) where you can access thousands of Ebooks and audiobooks at no cost. Many libraries have this option available; you can find books immediately simply by downloading the app and connecting it to your library card. This is a free service! I also use the nook app on my smartphone and occasionally purchase nook books- they even have a selection for $2.99 and under! While I am a big fan of our local library branch, my family seems to struggle with returning our books on time which means we rack up fines. When you use an e-reading app, your book is returned automatically on the due date or you have the option to renew.

Myth #2: You Need An Internet Connection To Read

If you’re using the Libby app or a device like a nook or kindle, you will need an internet connection to borrow, purchase and download a book. After your book is downloaded, you can read anywhere. I read ebooks while traveling and usually download several titles at my hotel so I have multiple books available to me throughout the trip. My 7 year old also appreciates having several titles available to him on the iPhone or iPad while he waits at my job after school. We have found ebooks like The Box-Car Children, Magic Treehouse and Pete The Cat, all encouraging his love for reading.

Myth #3: They Take Away From Local Libraries

I truly believe the local library is one of our town’s greatest resources. I remember anxiously waiting for the day my kids could sign up for their own library cards. We are fortunate that our library offers summer reading programs, kids’ storytimes, cooking classes, book clubs and many other programs. Even though we love the convenience of Ebooks, we still visit our library often. Jumping on the Ebook bandwagon doesn’t mean you can’t support your library!

So how can you celebrate Read An Ebook Day? If you’re already an Ebook lover, you might share what you’re currently reading on social media using the hashtag #ebooklove. If you’re an Ebook newbie, ask your local library about how you can borrow electronically or check out overdrive.com.

Are you a fan of Ebooks? I’ve love to hear what you’re reading!
