Between school drop-offs, grocery runs and bedtime stories, it’s easy to forget about your health. But here’s the thing: taking five minutes once a month to check in with your body – especially your breasts – can make a real difference.
Breast self-exams aren’t about perfection or fear; they’re about familiarity. Knowing what’s normal for you helps you notice when something feels off.
1. Know Why It Matters
As moms, we’re used to noticing changes – the kids’ moods, the dog’s food bowl, the missing left shoe. But how often do we notice changes in ourselves?
Doing a monthly self-breast exam helps you get familiar with your body’s normal look and feel. That way, if something changes – like a lump, dimple or swelling – you’ll recognize it right away.
Self-checks don’t replace mammograms or doctor visits, but they help you stay connected and proactive about your health.
2. Know When to Do It
Timing matters!
- If you’re still having periods, check your breasts about a week after your cycle ends. That’s when your breast tissue is less tender and easier to examine.
- If your periods are irregular, you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or post-menopausal, just pick the same day each month – maybe the 1st or the 15th – and make it your “mama check-in day.”
A simple phone reminder can keep you on track.
3. Know How to Do It
It’s quick, easy, and something you can do while getting dressed or showering.
Start in front of a mirror:
- Look for changes in size, shape, dimpling, or skin texture.
- Raise your arms and flex your chest — just to spot anything unusual.
Then use your hands:
- Use the pads of your three middle fingers, not your fingertips.
- Move in small circles — light, medium, and firm pressure — covering your whole breast, armpit, and up to your collarbone.
- Try doing it both lying down and standing up (soap in the shower makes it even easier).
If you feel something that doesn’t seem right — a lump, thickening, or tenderness that doesn’t go away — don’t panic. Most changes are not cancer, but it’s always best to call your doctor.
Bonus Tip: Make It A Monthly Ritual
Do your self-exam on a day when you already have a little “you time.” Maybe after a shower, during your skincare routine or before bed. Think of it as five minutes to honor the body that carries you through motherhood every single day.
You’re constantly caring for others – but this is one small way to care for yourself. The more you know your body, the more empowered you become.
