Tips for Choosing the Right Paint Color

I’m not sure what phase of adulting we call this, but we’ve lived in our house for almost 15 years and it is time to update. I’m not talking complete remodel, just an update from honey oak to classic white trim, from carpet to hard surface flooring, and of course, the dreaded conversation of paint colors. This is the worst part of any home improvement for me. I know exactly what I want in the design phase, but the actual color…I have no idea.

Call it gun-shy or risk aversion (I prefer the term classic) but whatever you will, it is obvious that I have commitment issues when it comes to colors. Even after debating with myself for half an hour at the salon, I typically opt for a French style manicure. It matches everything and never goes out of style, right? So yes, it takes me 30 minutes to end right back up at the same thing for a two week manicure. But, like most of my relationships, once I commit to a color (or style) I am all in—100%, loyal through and through—and my husband jumps on it before I have a chance to change my mind.

So here are a few things that I remind myself of as we begin updating our house:

1. It is not the foundation or a structural change. It is color, and like a relationship, it can and should evolve as necessary. Test an area before applying paint to an entire room, this may save a lot of heartache and money in the long run. Bless Joanna Gaines’ heart for inventing Peel-and-Stick paint samples!

2. Finishes make all the difference, know the role and define it.

Flat: matte finish, best in low traffic areas or ceilings.
Eggshell: adds warmth and depth, best in bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms, moderate traffic.
Satin: great for areas that are exposed to moisture like kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms or in high traffic areas like hallways.
Semi-gloss: good for high traffic areas but finish produces a little shine. Best used on trim and molding, kitchen cabinets, and doors.
Gloss: very shiny almost lacquered look that works best on furniture.

3. Note to self: Do not randomly search Pinterest for hours! Simply identify if there is a consistent theme to my already saved Pins.

4. As with most things in life, greatness is not accomplished the first go round, I’ll need a second coat, and sometimes a third.

5. Turn on the light! Along with paint, lighting can totally transform a space, so make sure there is adequate lighting while painting and reflecting on this relationship.

How do you choose your color?
