Ho, Ho, Oh Baby! Why Having a Holiday Baby Is Really Awesome

My holiday season last year started off pretty much the same as it does every year:

We baked cookies.

Our house was adorned in lights.

Christmas songs were on repeat.

The excitement for Santa was building.

One thing was very different though – we had a newborn!

When I shared my December due date with others, I was often greeted with a sympathetic look. Some even commented that it would be tough for my little guy to have a birthday so close to Christmas! Luckily for me I read this sweet post that helped me take a fun perspective on celebrating him in future years, but I also learned first hand that having a holiday baby is actually really awesome.

Family is ready to celebrate!

Whenever a new baby is born, family is generally the most excited to welcome him. Having a baby around the holidays? Take that excitement and multiply it! Everyone is already eager to gather together, and having a new little one to pass around seemed to bring out the love even more.

The perfect excuse to stay snuggled up inside.

During the holiday season, I always find myself adding even more to the to-do lists. I run around trying to make the best Christmas ever. While I enjoy doing this, I’m also usually exhausting myself. Having a newborn made me take a step back and realize that all the extras are fun, but the real deal is right there looking back at me with sleepy and oh-so-precious eyes. I chose to stay home and soak up those newborn snuggles and no one questioned it. More importantly, I gave myself a pass to not feel like I had to do everything.

Christmas Pajamas!

I think all moms have a soft spot for their kiddos in Christmas jammies, but a newborn with Santa feet? ALL the heart eyes!

The reason for the season.

I have always loved Christmas and all of the excitement that goes with it. For me, holding my newborn during the Christmas Eve service at our church was so incredibly meaningful. There is just something about a new baby that softens our mama hearts and reminds us of the good in life. Having this tiny baby in my arms for Christmas resonated with me the reason for this season. And the best part? The love I felt during the Christmas season with my newborn never left. His December birthday really makes me feel like there is a little Christmas cheer all year round.

  1. My sisters-in-law and I seem to specialize in holiday babies. Between three of us we’ve got a Memorial Day baby, a 4th of July baby, a Halloween baby, a Christmas baby, and a New Year’s Eve baby. While I understand the stress of arranging two celebrations at once, our holiday babies have the advantage of almost always getting to celebrate their birthday with family. We are all scattered about the country and Grandma and Grandpa can’t take time off work to travel to celebrate 14 (and counting) grandchildren’s birthdays. So our holiday kids get the advantage (to my way of thinking).
