10 Ways To Celebrate Women’s History Month in Wichita

It’s March which means we are officially in Women’s History Month. I would be lying if I told you I didn’t love a month completely dedicated to celebrating the fierce boss-babes that we are. Whether you work as a stay-at-home mom, you are employed by someone who does not call you mom on the daily, or your dogs have yet to master calling you mom, I’d like to encourage all women to lift each other up this month – and all other months, for that matter.

Here is a list to get you started:

10. Support local, women-owned businesses.

Gals, if you look around in Wichita, you will find that we are dominating this business-owner thing.  We literally have women doing everything! Our community has ladies who can come to you to detail your car, hook you up with the perfect bra, tidy up your home, or teach you how to cook a delicious meal. We have women who can teach you how to sew and paint.  If this does not convince you that women can handle homes, careers, and families while dealing with all the other craziness of the world, I hereby declare you a lost cause.

9. Donate or join local organizations that help women and girls.

I swear we have the biggest hearts in this city.  Wichita is home to countless (3000+) organizations that help our community.  A few of them are WASAC, Raise My Head Foundation, Rise Up For Youth, Dress for Success, BabyTalk, ICT SOS, The Girl Kindness Project, and Girls On The Run.  Follow them on social media or visit their websites.  Find out how you can join their organization and get involved in their mission.

8. Purchase art by local ladies or catch a performance by a female lead.

You know we have some AMAZING artists in this town.  Go out on First/Final Friday and see what is out there.  Some of my personal favorites are Jenny Wood, Kimberly Bowie of 88 Diamonds, or Piper.  We are NOT lacking women with talent in the visual arts either.  You may have seen an amazing mural by local Kamela Eaton, some beautiful home decor by Macey Haney, or these other talented ladies at a Final Friday: Alexis Rivierre, Chiyoko Myose, Iris Fletcher, Kirsten Shannon, and Lauren Doshier.

7. Read a book about women’s history.

Read about the women who came before us and paved the way. Here is a list for you and one for your little.  Oh, AND get that book from Watermark, another local, woman-owned business.

6. Send a note or card to a woman who inspires you.

This one is so easy.  Also, who doesn’t love getting unexpected praise in the mail?  I highly recommend SucculentPost, Love of Character, Vortex Souvenir, or The Workroom for your card needs made or sold by other local ladies.

5. Watch a “chick flick”.

I am not talking about your stereotypical, rom-com, Nicholas Spark movie.  I am talking girl power, hear me roar movies.  On the top of my list are Hidden Figures (duh), Wonder Woman, Iron Jawed Angels, A League of their Own, and On The Basis of Sex.

BONUS: Captain Marvel comes out March 8th, so it seems like a great excuse to hit up the movie theater with your friends.

4. Attend a conference or an event designed for women.

How lucky are we that we love to invest women in Wichita?  We just so happen to have two conferences in March focused on the ladies with some presenters who are sure to inspire you.  Check out EmpowerHer March 6th and 9 to Thrive March 8th.

Also, check out the “Women Empowered Market” March 9th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. which is focused on selling products made by women. The event will be held at First Presbyterian Church. Best part: admission is free!

3. Run for office.

Listen, I know this will take longer than March, but we have a plethora of local positions that need to be filled this 2019 election cycle.  If you have been thinking about it, regardless of your political party, do it.  It’s no secret that we need more women in politics.  Consider this me personally asking YOU, yes YOU, to run for office.

2. Make plans to volunteer with your besties.

Get your friends together and see if you can organize an activity.  I highly suggest contacting some of the organizations listed on #9 or others such as The Treehouse or Women’s Initiative Network.

1. TREAT YO SELF!!!

This is clearly the most important one. Sometimes this means getting a facial or a massage at Everyday Beaut , Kayla Arthur Massage, or Bohemia

Other times it’s scheduling a coffee date at Leslie Coffee or Sente or adult beverages at Hopping Gnome, CSB, The Monarch, Jenny Dawn Cellars, or the Anchor with friends.

Maybe treating yourself is waking up early and hitting up that yoga class at Hot Asana or Ganesh Yoga , finally making it to a boot camp at Road To Hauteness,or a barre class at Barre Forte.

Maybe you just want to grab some things  at the store and do an at-home spa while your partner or a friend takes the kids for 45 minutes.

Whatever you choose to do, don’t forget it is hard to spread your love to other women without taking care of yourself first.

Unfortunately there is a word limit to my post, so if you know any boss-babes I am missing, feel free to tell us about them in the comments so we can support them this March!

Born & raised in South America, Luisa has been calling Wichita "home" since middle school. Home is where she met her husband, Whit, and had her babies Eli (11) & Ellie (4). She is a nurse who received her BSN from Newman, MPH from Creighton, decided she enjoyed paying student loans, and enrolled in a DNP program which she hopes will come to an end in 2020. She loves volunteering and is a self-proclaimed activist. She prides herself in her uncanny ability to wait until the very last second to do things, yet still maintain three color-coded calendars. She laughs at her own (hilarious) jokes. Her favorite hobby is sleeping.
