I don’t know many people who don’t love barbecued meat. Living in Kansas we also have our own style and know our meat is good enough to go up against any in the world. National BBQ day is May 16th and as it nears here are a few of my favorite places around Wichita to dig in on some BBQ grub.
Hog Wild Pit Bar-B-Q
With 6 locations in Wichita and 10 other locations around Kansas and Nebraska, Hog Wild has perfected their slow-smoked meats. With a large menu of dinners and sandwiches you can find most meats to suit your appetite and budget. They also serve salads and baked potatoes “loaded” with barbecued meat to top it off. My personal favorite is the hot links with just enough heat but not so hot I feel like I want to die. Their curly fries as a side are also crispy and tasty.
Rib Crib
While Rib Crib is a franchise BBQ restaurant I still think it is really good. With a family who likes to argue about places to eat, this is one we usually can all agree on. Their menu includes all of the meats and rubs expected of a bbq restaurant but they also serve hamburgers that are smack your mama good. My 7 year old swears by their macaroni and cheese and every Tuesday is all you can eat ribs and sides after 4pm.
Bite Me BBQ
A fun and raucous environment downtown, especially during the lunch hour, Bite Me BBQ is a fun place to stop in and get your fill of barbecue. With a fully stocked bar, it may be very difficult to make it back to work after lunch. My favorite there is a the pulled pork sandwich. You get enough in that sandwich portion to make 2 meals if you wanted. New to their menu is smoked meat Mexican food.
B&C BBQ
What once was a boutique store with a BBQ buffet in the back has recently expanded to a full-blown downtown destination of both a BBQ restaurant and bar featuring live music in the evenings. They are now open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. The line for the buffet is usually long but worth the wait.
Delano Barbecue Company
Located in the Delano district this restaurant offers slow-cooked meats cooked on a wood smoker. All sides are made on site and the service is quick and courteous. Most of the time having your order ready before you’ve filled your drink.
The Angry Elephant
The Angry Elephant, located on Hillside close to 31st Street South, offers a variety of dishes. If you’re not looking for the “normal” meat dishes found at most BBQ restaurants, look no further and check out their smoked pizza and pasta menu.
