Smoke on the Plains BBQ & Music Festival
Derby KS | JUNE 10-11

What is it?

The City of Derby hosts a two day festival that includes professional and amateur BBQ competitions, a steak cook-off, free concerts and activities for all ages. This is the 11th year of the Smoke on the Plains Derby BBQ and Music Festival to be held on Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11 at High Park in Derby. This event is presented by Rock Regional Hospital.

For the Kids

Stop by the free Kids Corner sponsored by Smile Safari and Derby Orthodontics/Trimmell Anders & White Orthodontics on Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Your kids will sleep so well Saturday night after a full day of fun! They can learn how to be a princess with our princess shows throughout the day along with Spiderman lessons from the webmaster himself. They can also jump until they can’t anymore in one of the many bounce houses. Activities by Derby Fire & Rescue and Derby Parents as Teachers, face painting and more will have your kids begging to come back next year.

Mom tip: Your kids will get thirsty and sweaty from all the fun. Plan to stop by Kona Ice or Bongo Fruit Smoothies to help cool down. Water and pop will also be for sale in the Derby Noon Lions Club Beer and Beverage Garden.

For the Moms

Events kick off Friday night at 6 p.m. with food trucks, a beer and beverage garden and Shaken or Stirred Bartending. The Derby Recreation Commission is hosting the “Toss like a Boss Cornhole Tournament”, and The Silver Bullet Band takes the stage at 7 p.m.

Friday night also includes the popular People’s Choice BBQ tasting contest sponsored by Creekstone Farms from 7 to 9 p.m. Purchase six two-ounce samples of professional pulled pork for $5 and vote for your favorites. Tickets go on sale at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday starts off at 9 a.m. with Bloody Marys and Mimosas along with a few breakfast food trucks and music on the Security 1st Mainstage by Harrison Steele and Patz. Grab lunch from a food truck and listen to music by Whitnie Means as you head into the afternoon.

Mom tip: Head home after Whitnie Means performs to prepare for The Butcher Shop Salon’s Saturday Night 80’s Hair Contest. Stock up on hairspray and pink eye shadow! The best 80s hair will win a salon prize pack.

The 80’s rock cover band, Paramount, take the stage at 7 p.m. Get in touch with your inner 80’s child and throw some axes in the Tomahawk Truck mobile axe throwing trailer. Grab dinner at a food truck and drinks at the beer and beverage garden or from Shaken or Stirred Bartending.
