Taming the Tangles: Real Moms Share Their Favorite Hair Detanglers

When my daughter was born she had a full head of beautiful curly hair.  I remember thinking where did the curls come from and how do I manage those.  As she has gotten older it has continued to be a challenge. When she wakes up imagine Gene Wilder’s hair (he’s the original Willy Wonka for those unfamiliar with the actor) after having rolled around in a pile of leaves, now you have a picture of what my sweet little lady bug looks like in the morning. It’s frizzy, it’s kinky, and it is full of tangles. I don’t blame her when she hates having her hair brushed out, but I cannot be that mom that lets her beautiful little girl look like a ragamuffin.

On the bright side there are some great products out there to help manage the tangles and tears that come with any hair type. When looking for recommendations for the best products I love turning to other mom experts and these are the top recommendations from local Wichita moms.

It’s A 10 Miracle Leave-in Product:  A majority of the time when I ask another mom what their go to detangler is this is their recommendation.  With natural products that add shine, body, and smoothness It’s a 10 truly is a miracle.

Paul Mitchell Taming Spray: described as for children with unruly hair.  This product is specially made for the unique needs of children.

Fairy Tales Static Free Detangling Spray:  To tame static many leave in products can weigh your little one’s hair down, but not Fairy Tales.  With it’s organic ingredients and pleasant smell Fairy Tales makes addressing static and tangles a happy ending.

Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer:  Not only does this product leave hair softer, shinier, and less frizzy, it offers UV filters to protect from the drying effects of the sun.  Invisible Oil can be applied to damp hair and style as normal to decrease frizz and add shine or to dry hair to freshen day two style.

Original Sprout Miracle Detangler: Perfect for hair of any age and type Original Sprout boasts that not only does it make brushing easier, but also helps prevent breakage.  One mom says this is literally a miracle at getting even the most monstrous of tangles out.

Make your own:  Many moms recommend making your own detangler spray by mixing equal parts conditioner and water.  Using this on dry hair in the morning after a rough night’s sleep will help make the morning a little brighter.

If you aren’t getting the results you hoped for with just leave in conditioners for detangling products try some of these other tips and tricks shared by local moms.  Moms of girls with curly locks recommend the curly girl method as well as using a wide tooth comb and never brush.  A Wichita Mom team favorite hair tool is the WetBrush it runs through wet hair without a fight and is gentle on young and old scalps.  Check out a microfiber towel when drying your little ones locks, this will help prevent tangles before they can start. Try sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase will help hair not to get tangled at night like it might when sleeping on rougher fabrics that may dry hair out.
