Wichita Moms Are Falling in Love with Mahjong – And Kids Can Too!

If you’ve shopped at Love of Character, scrolled through Instagram, watched Julia Roberts’ interview on The Late Show or screened Crazy Rich Asians, there’s a chance you have seen or heard about Mahjong.

What is Mahjong?

Imagine a group of women (and men) sitting around a table set with beautifully designed tiles and a colorful mat. They are laughing, chatting, cheersing and trying to out-strategize each other in an effort to “mahjong” first. This centuries-old game with Chinese roots is having a major moment in the U.S. and moms everywhere, including right here in Wichita, are leading the charge.

For generations, Mahjong has been a cherished tradition in many cultures, from China to Japan to the Philippines to America; each with its own version of the game. Now, a new wave of players—especially women—are rediscovering its charm. It’s not just about winning; it’s about community, beautifully crafted mahjong sets, and a whole lot of fun!

Mahjong is a tile-based game traditionally played with four people. The objective is to be the first to collect sets of tiles to form specific combinations (a “Mahjong hand”). It’s a game of skill, strategy, and a bit of luck! 

Beyond the gameplay, Mahjong has become a modern social outlet. Across the country, Mahjong nights have replaced book clubs and bunco as a new favorite excuse to gather with friends. It’s screen-free, stress-reducing, and surprisingly addictive (in the best way). For many women, Mahjong has become a go-to “me time” and a way to recharge with friends.

Even better? It’s catching on with whole families. Mahjong might seem complex at first, but kids are quick learners and like any game, the more they play the easier it gets. By simplifying the rules, helping choose their “hand” or playing open-handed practice rounds, parents can introduce the game in a fun, no-pressure way. Plus, the numbers, patterns and matching aspects of Mahjong are great for developing early logic and memory skills.
