What’s Your ‘Game of Thrones’ Parenting Style?

We are coming up fast to the final season premier of Game of Thrones. As we approach April 14th I would like to reminisce on the parenting styles Game of Thrones taught us in their 8 years on air. *Don’t worry, you won’t need a family tree and maps of Westeros to follow along!*

Daenerys Targaryen – While technically not a parent to children during the series, she is the mother of dragons. She also took it upon herself to rescue hundreds, if not thousands, of slaves and lead a revolt against the slave owners. While this didn’t work out in the long run, she did do what she thought was right and took care of her own. She used everything in her power (including her fireproof body) to save the ones she loved.

Jaime Lannister – Throughout his arcs on the show you could tell he loved his children but they weren’t his first priority. He was doing what he could to keep them safe, but in the end it wasn’t enough and he definitely wasn’t the one trying to figure out how to keep them alive.

Eddard Stark – He loved his children fiercely and tried to teach them right from wrong. He didn’t shy away from punishments and made sure they understood consequences. In the few episodes we see him, you can tell that his children respect him even if they don’t always agree with him.

Cersei Lannister – Cersei loved her kids a little too much. She didn’t find faults in anything they did and because of their place in the castle didn’t seem to think anything was above them. She let them get away with anything, including murder, and laughed along when things were going well for them but poorly for the rest of the kingdom.

Catelyn Stark – One of the few people on the show who did everything for her kids in a seemingly normal manner. She would fight for her kids and what she thought was right. She literally went to war to try to save her children. Even in death she showed up to help her kids out (in the books, not the show).

Tywin Lanniester – He was a terribly mean father to all of his children. He called them names and berated them regularly, especially Tyrion. He did all he could to hide all of the family’s dirty secrets and keep them at the top of the hierarchy. He seemed to think his grandchildren would be better suited to sit on the throne than his own children.

Lady Olenna – While we only saw Lady Olenna in a grandmotherly role, you could see how she would be as a mother. Doing anything she could to help get her granddaughter out of a terrible situation. Even if it resorts to a little trickery and using others to get what you want.

If I were to say which parent I felt most resembled my parenting style, I would say a mix between Lady Olenna and Eddard Stark. I love my kids and am trying to teach them how to live a good life, but I’m not so honorable that I wouldn’t feel bad to throw a  low blow if I needed to to help my kids.

Do you watch Game of Thrones? Who most reflects your parenting style?
