6 Fun Family Activities to Do with Kids in Derby, KS

Wichita has so many great fun family activities, but don’t miss out on the fun Derby has to offer! Derby is growing so quickly and we are constantly adding new restaurants and attractions!

Here are some of our favorite family activities to do in the summer right now!

Field Station: Dinosaurs

Field Station Dinosaurs is one of our favorite places to go especially for the Mini Golf. Our kids love trying for a hole in one. We may or may not promise ice cream from Braum’s for anyone who gets a hole in one. One of our favorite gifts was the season pass to the park which comes in handy for whenever we want to go play a round of mini golf which happens at least twice a week. Don’t miss the shows inside the park either. The staff puts on new ones every season.

Derby Plaza Theaters

Sometimes it is too hot out to enjoy even the mornings. Our favorite way to beat the heat is to hit up the Derby Plaza especially on Wednesdays. Wednesdays at 10:30am they have $2 movies. Check out the website for what movies show each week. They even have a $6 kids snack tray.

Derby Bowl

Another fun way to beat the heat is bowling. Did you know you can sign your kids up to bowl two free games of bowling a day at Derby Bowl? All you pay for is the shoe rental and you’re all set! If you just want to sit and supervise, just sign the kids up but you can also buy discounted passes for two adults to bowl two games a day as well. Check out their website to find more info on hours and how to sign up for kids free bowling!

Warren Riverview Park

Have you checked out Warren Riverview Park yet?? If not, you’re missing out! We love grabbing lunch from Chick Fil-A (almost to signature status!) or packing a lunch, eating under the covered pavilion and then letting the kids climb the day away. It’s a blast and fun to walk down by the river as well.

Stone Creek Disc Golf Course

Fun fact about Derby is there is a great little disc golf park! This is a great activity to do with kids that are a little older. Stone Creek Disc Golf Park has disc golf, a fishing lake, bike/walk path and even a playground. So really it can be fun for all ages. Check out this fun hidden gem.

Rock River Rapids

Honestly the best way to beat the heat and tire those kiddos out in the summer is Rock River Rapids. We love having a fun special day at the water park. The kids area with the giant bucket of water is so much fun and provides tons of entertainment. We also love the lazy river and if the kids are tall enough, there are some fun water slides including a brand new green slide! Saturdays have a Tot Time which lets families with kids 5 and younger to access the water park earlier. If you can’t make it to the park until 5pm, you can get in to swim the last two hours for only $5.

There is so much fun to be had in Derby at all the parks and with all of our events happening through the Derby Rec Center and the city. Make sure to check out the Derby Public Library website for all of the fun activities and shows they have this summer.  I didn’t even name everywhere we love to go!  Not all of the fun is being had in Wichita! There are so many great options here in Derby.

I hope to see you out and about this summer!

Courtney Krome
Courtney and her husband Keith live in Derby with their wild ones Keira (Feb 2014) and Cedric (Nov 2016). Born and raised in South Dakota, Courtney moved to the Wichita area in 2013 to follow her husband’s career as a lineman. After working in retail management for 12 years, she switched gears to stay at home with the kiddos and is also a Stylist with Stella & Dot to escape the kids now and then. To keep sane, Courtney likes to read, obsess over makeup and fashion, embarrass her kids, and eat chips and queso. As a family, they love to go on adventures and cheer on the San Francisco 49ers obsessively.
