Recycled Hair: Getting More “Wear” Out of Your Wash Day

If you are reading this, chances are you are a mom, are going to be a mom, or really love a mom (and can totally share this quick easy “re-style” with her in which case she will probably thank you for saving her some time in the madness of the mornings). Let’s be honest ladies, if there is ONE thing that we could all use a little bit more of, it would be time. As an attempt to shave a few minutes off your morning routine I am sharing a quick easy way to recycle day-old hair!

  1. Start with hair that has been previously styled. (In my case this is two day-old hair that had been styled wavy the day before and then slept on)

2. Select your tools and styling products.

  • Comb with fine and medium teeth width
  • Crocodile clips (these hold SO MUCH HAIR and don’t slip out they’re seriously amazing)
  • Aveda Smooth Infusion – this is a styling prep product that defends against humidity (or basically Kansas) for 12 hours.
  • Aveda Phomollient – this is a styling foam that is totally weightless and adds shine and volume. It’s technically formulated for fine to medium hair (mine is crazy thick) but I love to use it as a second day product to add shine and oompf without any buildup.
  • Aveda Air Control – my holy grail of hairsprays not only does it smell amazing, it has an incredible amount of hold while remaining totally touchable.
  • Rubber Elastics – I buy these from Sally’s in either black or clear because they remain usable over time and don’t become brittle or break in the bag.
  • Bobby pins

(I’m a hairstylist/salon owner which is why I have this handy dandy tray- also I clearly didn’t use any foils but simply added it beneath the rubber bands so that they would be visible)

3. Apply dime sized amount of Smooth Infusion  product from midshaft to ends, then apply two pumps of Phomollient from root to midshaft and brush through. Next create three ponytails, one mohawk and one on either side. (Don’t fuss too much about making these perfect this is a quick textured style so imperfections just give it that lived-in boho feel)

4. Think Topsy-Turvy tool circa 1990’s and split each ponytail in half above the elastic using your fingers and flip it through to create this rolled/ twisted inside-out look.

5.  Lift the middle section up and out of your way using a clip and then secure the two outside ponies together using bobby pins.

6. Lay the middle pony back down over the outside two you have joined together and then take a small section of hair from both sides and bobby pin them in a criss-cross method to hide the elastic and smooth out the look.

7. Lightly mist the finished style all over with Air Control flexible hairspray. I like to use the actual can of hairspray to give my bangs a bit of a boost on the second day.

  • To do this, hold your bangs straight up perpendicular from your scalp and spray hairspray right at the scalp/ midshaft.
  • Then wrap the hair around the can to create a “bump” count to ten and release the hair and gently loosen with the wider-teeth side of the comb .

8. Ta-dah you’re done!

Because this was technically the third day since I washed my hair, I didn’t touch up the curls or fuss too much with the end product. I love that it looks slightly lived-in and relaxed without being the usual lions mane my hair is!
