13 Book Series for Your Child to Read After Finishing Harry Potter

The day you’ve long awaited as a Harry Potter fan arrives – your child is finally old enough to read The Sorcerer’s Stone! Or maybe you’re taking the read-aloud route so you can enjoy it together – either way, the time has come.

And then, faster than you can say, “Evanesco!” – it’s gone.

At least, that’s what happened in our house. My seven-year-old devoured all seven books in the series in record time, and I was left with a kid hungry for more and no idea what to give her next. Finding novels that challenge her while keeping the content age-appropriate is always a bit of a challenge. Over the next two years, we had some hits and misses as we researched and read and bought and borrowed. We found stacks of tomes dedicated to orphans and underdogs using fantastical means to save the world from evil doers!

Here’s our list of mom- and kid-approved book series to try after you’ve finished Harry Potter but still need a little magic in your life:

Harry Potter & the Cursed Child and The Hogwarts Library

Books to read after Harry Potter

Ok, these aren’t series – but if you have a die-hard Potterhead, make sure they get their hands on these supplemental books! Harry Potter & the Cursed Child is written in play form (my daughter loved this – a lot of fans don’t), and the Library is a collection of guides to the wizarding world, including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

Yes, it’s a dark as it sounds. But it’s also funny and an interesting look at ethics.
