These mom-tested lactation drinks will boost your milk supply while keeping you hydrated!
Any nursing mama knows that part of their breastfeeding and/or pumping journey involves worrying about what to eat or drink. Personally, I am constantly thinking about maintaining my supply and the things I eat/drink I try to focus on staying hydrated and having a balanced diet, but it is not always easy – especially when stress and exhaustion play a big part in being a mother.
Whether you produce just enough or you are trying to build a freezer stash, here are some drinks that will help you meet your goal. Remember with the list below, if you aren’t also drinking plenty of water, eating and sleeping well, and regularly nursing, they won’t work magic on their own.
COLD LACTATION DRINKS
Coconut Water
Low in sugar and high in electrolytes, coconut water is a great option to stay hydrated and helps with supply. The taste is not everyone’s favorite cup of tea so that is why a lot of mamas go for drinks like Body Armor (below).
Body Armor
Delicious and convenient, I love having different flavors of Body Armor in my fridge for the days I am struggling to meet my water intake goal. It is also a great option for those who don’t like the taste of coconut water. I stick to the Lyte options with only 2g of sugar as the regular drinks contain 21g of sugar!
Starbucks Pink Drink
This delicious and refreshing drink gained popularity a few years ago on Instagram for its vibrant pink color. It quickly became a go-to drink for nursing moms as coconut milk is both hydrating a high in fat – great for upping your supply. It is my go-to iced drink, even when I am not breastfeeding.
Made with coconut milk, strawberry acai juice and freeze-dried strawberries, the Pink Drink is one of the most recommended drinks in social media groups for breastfeeding mama. A grande is around $5 so this option can get costly if you want to drink this regularly. You can also find several copycat recipes to make this delicious drink at home.
Greater Than
A healthier alternative to Body Armor, Greater Than offers a vegan, paleo, sugar free, caffeine free, gluten free and organic options for staying hydrated. You will also find a variety of flavors like peach clementine, and mango orange. It is, however, much more costly than some other options.
Majka – Lactation Protein Powder
Rich in supplements and flavor, this protein powder is perfect to help breastfeeding moms get the nutrition they need for themselves and their babies. It comes in three flavors (Vanilla Chai, Green Vanilla, and Chocolate). Add it to your favorite smoothie recipe: banana, berries, spinach and oatmilk is my go to combination. You can also have it as a hot drink by adding it to any warm milk.
HOT LACTATION DRINKS
Tea-Tas by Legendairy Milk
I love all of Legendairy Milk’s lactation supplements, and Tea-Tas is no exception. It is so popular that it is currently sold out butI recommend you add yourself to the waitlist! Made from ixbut – a herb from Guatemala – it might take some time to get used to the taste. I either drink it with honey or add it to another herbal tea blend. You will notice a big difference in your supply and your letdown – I know I did!
Oat Mama Lactation Tea – Pomegranate and Blueberry
This delicious tea is fenugreek and caffeine free. The reviews show that not only have other mamas enjoyed the taste, but they have also seen their supply increase in matter of days. You can also enjoy this tea iced.
Milksta Boobie Latte
If you are more of a coffee drinker, I recommend you replace your daily coffee with Milksta – vegan, caffeine-free, sugar-free and gluten-free. It is made with decaf coffee, moringa leafs, oat creamer, coconut oil creamer, dates, gluten-free brewer’s yeast, stevia, spinach and carrots. While the combination sounds odd, it is delicious!
I like to get the instant kind as it makes it easier for me to drink when I’m busy with my little one. I just mix it up with hot water, and it is ready for me. I usually top it off with oat milk or coconut milk to make it even creamier.
